Hello, my one and only vehicle that is depended upon daily in my family (a 1998 Honda Odyssey) has been making terrible noises from the exhaust system. Took it into local muffler shop and have been given the news that the entire exhaust system needs to be replaced to the tune of $750. They said they could fix 2 parts first ($400) & the final part separately. I am a part-timer & to say coming up with the money to do this will take awhile is an understatement. I have a usual trusted mechanic that I go to but as of late he has been too busy to help me out & thus, I have no idea if this is a fair price. Also, are there any DIY options that are safe? Please advise. Thanks so very much!
If you regular mechanic is willing to take a look and verify that is a good price, that is a great start, I am not certain what the scope of the repair is due for to have an idea on fair price. If it involves the replacement of a muffler and/or catalytic converter then yes it can be a spendy repair.
There is no way they are replacing the 'entire' exhaust system for $750.
You couldn't buy all the parts for that amount.
What parts do they want to replace?
Did they take you back into the shop and show you?
Can your mechanic at least just look at it to give you a 2nd opinion?
You could offer to pay him just to check it out and advise you what is wrong.

Mos of the time, what you consider an exhaust noise if just an old catalytic converter. I would take the car to a mechanical shop you trust and ask for a second opinion. The converter can be replaced without replacing the entire exhaust system.

It's really hard to say considering I don't know where you're located or exactly what's wrong with the exhaust. Have your mechanic refer you to someone he recommends & get a second oppinion. Looks like you have a muffler, cat & resinator at least 2 hours worth of work if they all need to be replaced. I'd shop around...
