How do I get the odor of mildew out of my car? Somehow the carpet in the back seat and under the driver's seat got wet while it was parked for two weeks at the airport, and now you can smell it from a distance.
I know you want to get rid of the awful smell, but you also want to get rid of the mildew that probably contains mold that could cause you health problems down the road.
1. You need to soak up as much of the water as possible. If you have a wet/dry shop-vac use it to suck up as much of the water as possible. If not, blot with towels to get most of the water out and then use a hair dryer to dry it completely.
2. Sprinkle with baking soda and work it into the rug with your hands. Let this dry 24 - 48 hrs and then vacuum out the baking soda.
3. If it still smells, you could lightly spray it with vinegar / water which will make your car smell vinegary for a while, but will eventually go away.
4. Last option is to call in a professional detailer and have them thoroughly wash and dry the rugs.
