I recently bought a used car and am under warranty for the next 3 mos./3000 mi. The belt on the car squealed and broke and the car is now in the shop. I have been told that the AC compressor needs to be replaced to fix the problem. Does the system need to be flushed? Do the accumulator, orifice tube, filter dryer, belt AND fluid need to be replaced to complete the job? I was quoted an estimate and am wondering about the necessity of the rest of the work aside from the AC compressor.
If your compressor has become faulty causing the belt to break the compressor clutch may have locked up from age. When this happens it prohibits the belt from turning and will cause it to break every time. When a compressor clutch locks up it can cause the internal parts to bind giving shaved metal particles throughout the system, with this said yes you will have to replace the orifice tube and various components. Freon which is the gas in the A/C system it will escape in most cases there is a system.
Any time an a/c system is opened, moisture gets in. The system will not work with moisture in it. Also, if the compressor went bad, it's possible you have debris in the system. Without flushing the system, the debris will cause it to fail again, soon. The fluid you are referring to is the refridgerant that actually makes the air cold. I do agree with your technician that all of this work needs to be done. If the work is done correctly, you most likely will not have problems with your a/c system for quite a while.
